Chapter 23

Rear Admiral Brown felt the weight of the operation bearing down on him as he met with his task force commanders and the Marine division commander for the last time.

Brown motioned to the holodisplay showing the Mongolia systems and the transition points for the four formations. “Everything is set. We will launch capital missiles immediately after transition. No one needs to get caught with antimatter warheads on their ships. Each task force will have their capital missiles target the enemy formations that are attacking another task force, as we may find the Globur too close to use them to defend ourselves.”

Brown ran the plan through on the holodisplay. “The three task forces will transition into normal space in the form of a three-dimensional triangle so that the one not under attack could easily assist ones that are. The Marine assault force will arrive in the middle of the triangle, hopefully after the Fleet has gained the upper hand against the Globur.”

The Globur forces on the holodisplay represented the ones they knew were in the system, based on a reconnaissance that had gathered the information from a few light-days out of the system.

Brown looked at the other rear admirals. Pang and Jones were veterans and had survived some tough scrapes. The Marine colonel looked as impassive as ever. Colonel Shaka was an accomplished Marine, but he had never seen combat himself. That was about to change for all of them very soon. Brown wondered how he would view things on the other side of the battle—if he survived.

Brown drew a deep breath, to sum up, and end the meeting. “The enemy will not have seen us field more than one task force since the battle in the Alsace system, and that was a long time ago. We should have the advantage. We will have the carriers launch everything they have right after transitions. Full combat launch, no pauses between fighters. Every ship will sprint launch all missiles and torpedoes after we transition. We can update targeting in the seconds after, but we must get a hammer blow in right away.”

Pang nodded. “We won’t get a second chance. These Globur ships are tough, and the ones TF13 damaged on the way out will have repaired themselves by now.”

“That assumes we have favorable odds,” injected Jones. “The recon we have from the system is over a week old. The Globur have surprised us before. Marines should be already deployed to repel boarders because they will try to board us. They may have ships in space, waiting for us to transition. It’s going to be a hell of a fight.”

“And we are agreed that we will save the quantum torpedoes?” Brown continued. “The advantage of the new weapon is one of range, and so Rear Admiral Pang will only use them as a last resort?”

The officers nodded.

Colonel Shaka was a man of few words. He often did not speak during these meetings unless called upon. “My division will have the honor of liberating a planet in the first planetary assault conducted by the Marine Corps in over 300 years.
